On Thursday, November 21, 2024, His Excellency President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani laid the foundation stone for the extension of the petroleum product depot of the Société Mauritanienne des Hydrocarbures (SMH) in Nouakchott, as part of the celebrations marking the 64th anniversary of the national independence.
This strategic investment, valued at 36 million USD, will increase storage capacity to 100,000 cubic meters, divided between diesel, fuel oil, gasoline, and kerosene. The project aims to ensure a constant and secure supply of petroleum products while strengthening Mauritania’s energy sovereignty.
With the support of major consuming mining companies such as SNIM, Kinross Tasiast, MCM, and the Société Mauritanienne d’Électricité (Somelec), the project seeks to enhance storage infrastructure to mitigate supply interruptions and reduce costs.
Minister of Energy and Petroleum, Mohamed Ould Khaled, emphasized that this project reflects the President’s commitment to promoting the national economy and ensuring a sustainable energy supply. In just one year, the savings generated will recover the entire initial investment, ensuring a quick return for the country.
The event was attended by the highest national authorities, including Prime Mokhtar Ould Diay and several government members, marking a strategic milestone for Mauritania.
