His Excellency Mohamed OULD KHALED, Minister of Energy and Petroleum of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania, accompanied by Mr. Ismail Abdelvettah, General Director of the Société Mauritanienne des Hydrocarbures (SMH), welcomed on December 19, 2024, in Nouakchott, a high-level Senegalese delegation led by His Excellency Birame Souleye Diop, Minister of Energy, Petroleum, and Mines of Senegal, for a working visit scheduled for December 19-20, 2024. Minister Diop was joined by Mr. Alioune Gueye, General Director of PetroSen Holding, along with directors from the Senegalese ministries and PetroSen. The Senegalese delegation was warmly received by their Mauritanian counterparts, representing the Ministry of Energy and Petroleum and the SMH.
This working visit aims to strengthen relations between Mauritania and Senegal, particularly in strategic areas such as energy, petroleum, and gas. Key topics discussed include the monitoring of joint projects, including the Greater Tortue Ahmeyim (GTA) project, a symbol of cross-border collaboration and a driver of regional development, and the exploration of sustainable development opportunities, with a shared vision for responsible and beneficial exploitation of natural resources.
Highlights of the visit included an official working session marked by constructive exchanges between the two delegations, reinforcing their commitment to addressing common energy challenges, as well as in-depth discussions on the progress of the GTA project, which is expected to begin production in early 2025.
This meeting underscores the commitment of both nations to collaborate closely to address regional energy challenges and promote exemplary cooperation. By focusing on strategic initiatives like the GTA project, Mauritania and Senegal reaffirm their dedication to maximizing the economic and societal benefits of their energy resources for future generations.
