Preparation for GTA Gas Production: Training for SMH Engineers in Offshore Health, Safety, and Risk Management

Mr. Ismail Abdel Vetah, General Director of SMH, has launched a strategic training program for SMH engineers to operate on offshore platforms as part of preparations for the start of gas production for the Grand Tortue Ahmeyim (GTA) project, scheduled for early 2025.

From November 23 to 26, 2024, a team of SMH engineers attended and validated essential health and safety certifications. These trainings, crucial for ensuring safe operations on offshore platforms, are designed to equip SMH engineers with the skills necessary to oversee and manage production, storage, and liquefaction activities on the FPSO (Floating Production Storage and Offloading) and the FLNG (Floating Liquefied Natural Gas).

In a commitment to inclusion, SMH ensured active participation of women engineers, enhancing their representation in the Mauritanian oil and gas sector.

The training courses attended and certifications obtained include:

  • BOSIET: Offshore safety, risk management, and emergency response training.
  • HUET: Emergency preparedness for helicopter access to offshore platforms.
  • CA-EBS: Emergency breathing system training for situations involving pressure loss or gas leaks.

This program represents a key step in preparing SMH teams to effectively support the GTA project’s production while meeting the safety and performance standards required for offshore platforms.
