The Mauritanian Hydrocarbons Company (SMH), represented by its Director General, Dr. Mohamed-Lemine Raghani, took part in a high-level panel organized as part of AOW:Energy 2026, under the theme: “The Global Leadership Scenario: How Leaders in the Africa Energy Sector Are Shaping Strategies to Align with the Future Energy Outlook.”
The session brought together African and international energy leaders to discuss strategies enabling Africa to maximize the value of its resources in a context shaped by evolving energy demand, new investment and competitiveness challenges, and major transformations across the global energy landscape.
Speaking about Mauritania’s experience, SMH’s Director General emphasized that the development of oil and gas resources must serve as a catalyst for economic transformation and sustainable value creation, extending beyond the direct revenues generated from their exploitation.
He also highlighted the growing role of National Oil Companies and the importance of strengthening their technical, commercial, and financial capabilities, enabling them to play a full role in decision-making and to build balanced and sustainable partnerships with international operators that reconcile investment attractiveness with the long-term interests of producing countries.
Discussions also addressed the development of local content, energy infrastructure, and domestic gas utilization, particularly for power generation, as key drivers for increasing the economic benefits generated by energy projects.
Mauritania’s experience through the development of the Greater Tortue Ahmeyim (GTA) project was also highlighted as an illustration of the opportunities offered by major energy developments, as well as the importance of simultaneously building national capabilities commensurate with their scale and complexity.
SMH’s participation in AOW:Energy 2026 forms part of its ongoing efforts to strengthen its role as Mauritania’s National Oil Company, develop partnerships with African and international stakeholders in the energy sector, and contribute to the sustainable development and valorization of Mauritania’s energy resources in support of the country’s economic development.
